TITTLE
RATIONALE
This proposal will focus on the challenges of traditional burial and funeral ceremonies in Njikoka local government area of Anambra state. It will look into the heavy financial burden attached to the burial, some cultural practices which has lost its values in the present times and the consequences arising therefrom to the bereaved after this burial.
BACKGROUND
Burial is the final rite aim respect given to a dead person. The oxford advanced Learners dictionary defines burial as the act or ceremony of burying the dead. This means that burial is the last activity in honour of the dead person. It is done to ensure that the soul of the departed will rest in peace. It is a general Igbo belief that the soul of the dead keeps wandering from one place to another until a funeral rite is performed for him.
In igbo land in general and Njikoka in particular, a heavy financial burden is attached to the burial and funeral ceremonies of the dead even to the detriment of the living. The items needed to be purchased for the funeral has become a source of wory as the poor may not be able to meet up with the financial involved, thus living the funeral government depending on who died, certain condition may be met before the dead will be buried otherwise the corpse may remain unburied for ever. This financial involvement has made some people to leave their loved ones in the mortuary for many years and more people may die kept in the mortuary again even when the first dead person has not been buried.
This research will focus on the challenges arising from this unfavourable situation and support solution to curb this age long hydra headed tradition and culture in Njikoka local government area of Anambra state.
PURPOSE OF THE STUDY
Burial ceremonies in Njikoka has been a source of concern to the people especially in recent times. Because of the high cost of living and poverty in the people find it difficult to feed themselves, pay their medical bills and train their children in school. But death is inevitable and does not notify anybody. It is a treason that whether you are poor or rich that you must burry your death but it is this financial involvement which does not add any value to the death that constitutes the major worry to the living. Though some have the money to spend but this challenges is mostly for the hoe- ploid who constitutes the majority of the people in each society.
The aim of this research to examine the challenges of burial and funeral ceremonies in Njikoka local government area of Anambra state, it should be noted that some people die because they cannot afford their medical treatment even when their relatives can comfortably take care of the expenses. The society has laid down rules which must be satisfied before a dead person is buried. This rules and its attendant difficulties in meeting constitute the major challenges which this research seeks to address
SIGNIFICANT OF THE STUDY.
The outcome of this research will be useful in many ways.
First, it will help the general public to be aware that any culture or tradition that is no longer in the interest of the citizens must be modified or changed.
Second, it will help the entire communities in the local government and the entire igboland to know that the amount of money spent on burial and funeral ceremonies does not add or remove anything to the life after death of the dead.
Third, students and researchers will find more solution to heavy financial burden attached to other cultural and traditional activities in igboland such as traditional marriage, naming ceremony, festivals and other activities which has discouraged many people from carrying out their activities when they wish to do so. For instance, because of two much money involved in traditional marriage rite in some communities has made young boys and girls who are of marriage age not to get married because they could not meet up with the financial obligations.
Literature Review. This is a review of revealed works to the current study. It looks at the lacuna that exist between already existing works and the present work thus fill the gap.
