Acting president Osinbajo just sacked the DSS director for invading the NASS Earlier this morning
I condemn, in the strongest possible terms, today’s action by the Department of State Security in preventing lawmakers from entering the National Assembly chamber. Such an action is an assault on our democratic institutions that all well-meaning Nigerians should come together to condemn, irrespective of the actors. We must collectively understand the principle of separation of powers, and not allow our institutions to be further debased under any guise, for any length of time.
While I commend the firing of the DG of the DSS by Acting President Yemi Osinbajo, the mere fact that the DSS felt empowered to take such an action at all, should give everyone pause. We must not go back to the days of executive tyranny in this country. The days of military rule with no regard for rule of law are not that far in the past.
As for our lawmakers, it is apparent that they are largely uninterested in the actual business of legislation. They continue to act with impunity because we have allowed them to do so for so long.
Here is the issue; an emergency meeting had been convened for the leadership of the National Assembly to sort out monetary issues already threatening the conduct of the February 2019 general elections. This meeting was only scheduled yesterday, 6 August 2018! Despite this urgency, our lawmakers managed to stray far from the programme and turn things into a circus per usual.
As Nigerians, we cannot afford to be distracted by the drama and politricking. Now more than ever, we need to hold these so-called leaders accountable.
Therefore, I challenge us all to ask the important question which is: “when is the National Assembly going to approve the N242 billion required for the conduct of the 2019 elections?
Are these lawmakers really going to #SaveOurDemocracy? Are they even willing to? My guess is as good as yours. They aren't.
Nigeria has big problems that requires urgent and sustainable solutions if we are to truly transform this country: competent and serious leadership, reliable public institutions, reliable healthcare, affordable quality education, innovative and disruptive policies for the good of all and a stable economy that caters to the needs of over 195million Nigerians.
There is no way that these solutions can be provided by this crop of political actors who are evidently much more concerned with shuffling aimlessly and at will between parties that stand for nothing but the padding of their own pockets with public loot.
I urge all Nigerians to collect their PVCs and begin to select leaders that will prevent further shame from befalling our nation. It is time for the people to win!
