An article by Tai Emeka Obasi with above title has evoked memories of the man who many refer to as the father of people-oriented governance and a crusader of true modern democracy.
Good governance is the act of rendering to citizens productive services and life-changing policies which help the citizens to live a comfortable and fulfilled life.
When we talk about that good governance, which centres on satisfactory service delivery in Nigeria's political climate, the same name keeps reoccurring like a decimal in the heart of many Nigerians - Mr Peter Obi, the former governor of Anambra state. A man that brought a solid and stable political atmosphere in the state with his completely different style of calm, humility and forever going for what benefits the state and her citizens above all else.
We all are aware of how volatile the political climate of Anambra State was prior to the coming of messaic Peter Obi. His style of leadership brought about the new Anambra State we are jealously enjoying presently.
Let me take you down the memory lane a little. Let's focus on SECURITY.
No well-meaning Anambrarian would argue against the fact that in issues of security in the state that Mr. Obi was the sharp brain behind the current slogan in the lips of many Ndi-Anambra and print media that "Anambra State is the safest state in Nigeria."
Before his administration, Anambra State security apparatus was so poor and porous that a state governor who in reality was the Chief Security Officer of the state he was governing, with his retinue of security personnel around him, was KIDNAPPED!
Gentlemen, if a state governor could be kidnapped in his state, what then was the fate of an ordinary man on the street?
God would continue to bless the man we also love to call Okwute for the wonders he did in restoring the confidence of the people of the state towards our security apparatus.
The security situation of the state prior to his administration was so volatile that the state was more or less a den for hardened and notorious criminals. Kidnapping, bank robbery, armed robbery and other social vices were very common and daily experiences. These terrible vices led to the unfortunate level where most of our billionaires and millionaires dared not step a foot in the state without hiring police or military escorts to guide them till they went back to their bases outside the state. Again, most of our successful illustrious sons took their sons or daughters traditional marriages outside the state for fear of the men of underworld having a field day in the state which shouldn't be so, considering the traditions accompanying the said traditional marriages.
Anambra State was indeed a "Home for all" sorts of criminal activities. At a time, kidnapping became a goldmine business among those armed bandits. A lot of our billionaires, millionaires, Igwes, business tycoons were being kidnapped occasionally while hundreds of millions were paid by their families as ransoms to the kidnappers.
Before Mr. Obi changed Anambra state from "Home For All" to more befitting name "Light of The Nation ", anybody that was living as at that time irrespective of your financial and state status, didn't sleep with two eyes closed at nights. In fact, it even got to a point where armed robbers sent notifications to any location in preparation for their coming. It's funny right? Believe me, those days were so bad and pathetic.
Some mischief makers might want to argue otherwise but truth is forever sacrosanct. The ACCOLADES and COMMENDATIONS from well-meaning Anambrarians and Nigerians that have gone the way of the former governor for having effectively curbed the security challenges ravaging the state during his time were well directed.
He sent many, if not all criminals either to early retirement or exile from the state. No wonder the billionaire kidnapper Evans confessed during his interrogations that the heat on his gang members during Mr. Obi's tenure was so intense that they had to relocate away from the state completely and permanently.
Today, Nigerians are talking about HERDSMEN and BOKO HARAM menace. Believe me, if we are serious and honest towards fighting/ending this menace, we need a man with the firm will and sound political leadership in the helm of affairs.
Mr. Obi is not a MILITARY MAN neither is he a PARAMILITARY personnel. But he knows exactly what is needed to achieve an appreciably safe society. He did it in his state even when state governors didn't control the police or the military.
I still remembered how he equipped our security apparatus/personnel, local vigilantes with modern and first class security equipments. He donated not less than 200 hilux vans to the entire 177 communities in the state to make them work optimally.
What about the police? Military, etc? He adequately equipped every security organization/establishment in the state to effectively operate at maximal efficiency.
His success wasn't just in security. If I should give just a tip of what he did in EDUCATION,ROAD INFRASTRUCTURE, STRUCTURAL and INSTITUTIONAL DEVELOPMENTS you would be amazed and join me in asking "When will Nigerians start listening to Mr Peter Obi?".
Are you aware that the entire 177 communities in our dear state felt the alluring breeze of his good and effective governance during his tenure?
Even a biased mind would give a standing ovation for what Okwute did in Anambra State during his tenure.
As long as he continues to preach good governance and prudence in public financial dealings, I will continue to be his disciple because this man is worth emulating.
I still remember how he held his audience spellbound during his 1st October 2016 lecture on The Platform, Lagos. His speeches have been practical, calling for prudence by effectively cutting costs of governance and delivering real dividends of democracy to people of dear country.
I will forever remain an apostle of Mr. Obi because I see him in the league of the likes of Bill Clinton, Barack Obama, etc of our times - great leaders that laboured for the well-being of mankind. It is therefore no overstatement when this very humble enigma is being referred to as "A Man That Came Far Ahead Of His Generation."
And more, his qualities have crossed the boundaries of national and continental lines to now dwell firmly on the global plain. From Yale to Oxford and beyond, Mr. Obi's speeches have found ways to the archives of these great institutions.
While the whole world is listening and inviting him all over the globe to impact his repertoire of knowledge, people of his country are seemingly not interested in tapping from this source of knowledge the man dishes out freely.
Nigerians MUST start listening to Peter Obi, especially those in various arms and levels if governance and leadership if indeed we are interested in salvaging what is left of a nation battered mercilessly and brutally by bad leadership.
Quoting Chief Tai Emeka Obasi..... God no longer comes down to speak to people directly. He speaks through someone.
