Father's Day was first celebrated in the early 1900s as a reaction to Mother's Day. It initially did not have the same impact as Mother's Day because of a perceived lack of sentimentality toward fathers as compared to mothers. A woman named Sonora Dodd, one of six siblings raised by a single father, made a major push for the holiday in Washington, which was the first state to celebrate the holiday in 1910. Father's Day was not officially recognized as a national holiday until 1972, 58 years after Woodrow Wilson named Mother's Day an official holiday.
