The four Anambra state government officials who were sponsored by the state government to Kennedy School, Harvard University, Boston, United States of America have praised Governor Willie Obiano for his mentorship and inspiring leadership which has motivated his political appointees to excel.
They spoke to Anambra Broadcasting Service from America where they are rounding up a month long leadership course.
Professor Kate Omenugha, Anambra state Commissioner for Basic Education said;
"Harvard is in a class of its own. The course we are attending is called leaders in development. The approach is the use of case studies that exposes one to challenges of developing nations such as conflicts, economy, revenue generation, politics. It brings to fore skills such as the art of negotiations, authentic leadership, group dynamics and working with the group, introspection and understanding of self etc. I have enjoyed every bit of it and have found it engaging. Moreover I can identify with these case studies and see some of them as very real in our state. No doubt we shall share our experiences with the exco members and people in our ministry we are expected to lead. The experience will aid us to improve on governance".
On his part, Mr Obi Nwankwo, the Commissioner for Public Utilities, Power and Domestic Water Supply said; "Harvard training changes your perspective about a lot of things. The environment upgrades your thoughts and ideas and gives you the feeling and desire of achieving great things. The interactions with lecturers and classmates inspires you and teaches you to always think about good and quality leadership.
Mr Nwankwo thanked Governor Willie Obiano for giving him and the others the opportunity. "In our Harvard class is a serving Senator and member of the House of Representatives, they are full of praise for the Governor for having a liberal mind to empower and encourage his political appointees". "The Harvard training will help us improve on our job towards the development of Anambra state. Personally the module on negotiations will enable us derive better value for Ndi Anambra from contractors. I am also now better equipped to improve on my relationships with staff, colleagues and other stakeholders".
Ngozi Monica Okonkwo, former Accountant General of Anambra state and currently Special Adviser to the Governor on Training, Efficiency and Motivation said; This has been a rewarding experience and we are all grateful to His Excellency, Governor Willie Obiano for this wonderful opportunity. The experience and knowledge gained will definitely help improve on governance and policy when we come back. One now appreciates local issues and challenges from a global perspective".
Ogbuefi Melie Onyejepu, the Special Adviser to Governor Willie Obiano on Budget Monitoring and Implementation said; "The experience is fantastic and worthwhile. My expectations from the training so far have been exceeded in many diverse ways which are not limited to leadership,teamwork ,negotiation skills, planning, organization and execution of state programms in a manner that it is purpose and value driven. In addition, when we come back, we will bring to bear what we have learnt about understanding specific challenges and managing change in a dynamic world, working through problems and new ideas in order to drive desired developmental changes".
